Our team were recently commissioned to install this striking handleless kitchen in a client’s home in Loughton. Combining dark grey cabinetry with warm natural-oak detailing, the finished space feels contemporary and sophisticated, without the darker palette becoming too dominant.
The kitchen was designed using Schmidt’s Caneo cabinetry in a dark graphite finish, with clean lines, full-height storage and integrated black Siemens appliances.
At the centre sits a large island, where contrasting Alabama natural oak brings warmth and texture into the room. It’s a bold design, but the balance of dark finishes, natural wood and carefully placed lighting gives the kitchen a warm feel.
Sleek Caneo Handleless Kitchen Cabinetry
Full-height Caneo cabinetry runs across the main kitchen area, providing plenty of storage while keeping the overall design simple and uncluttered.
The handleless kitchen doors are particularly effective here. Without handles breaking up the cabinetry, the dark graphite finish flows across the space, with matching dark grey interiors continuing the look.
Black Siemens appliances have also been integrated into the cabinetry. Rather than standing out against the darker units, they become part of the overall design and keep the clean lines intact. Their simple black finish feels very much at home within the graphite units and means there’s no sudden change of colour or finish to interrupt the cabinetry.
A Statement Island with a Warm Natural-Oak Worktop
The large central island is naturally one of the key features in our design. Its dark base continues the graphite colour palette, but the warm Alabama natural-oak worktop changes the feel completely. The contrast softens the darker cabinetry and introduces a natural finish into what could otherwise have been quite a dramatic scheme.
The oak worktop extends out to form an informal seating area, making the island a welcoming space to sit and spend time as well as providing valuable preparation space.
Balancing Dark Graphite with Natural Oak
The Alabama natural-oak finish hasn’t been restricted to the island either.
Open oak shelving has been introduced between areas of graphite cabinetry, with integrated lighting drawing attention to books, ceramics and personal items on display. It adds another dimension to the dark grey kitchen and breaks up the larger runs of cabinetry.
We particularly like how the same combination has been continued into the cabinetry facing the adjoining living space. Rather than the kitchen finishing abruptly, the two areas feel much more connected.
It’s these smaller details that stop the graphite from feeling too heavy and give the finished room more personality.
A Dekton Kelya Splashback Adds Subtle Texture
Along the back wall, a dark stone-effect Dekton Kelya splashback sits naturally against the graphite cabinetry.
Its subtle veining introduces some movement and texture without competing with the other finishes in the room. Against the simplicity of the handleless units, it adds detail without making an dark scheme feel busy.
A Contemporary Handleless Kitchen for a Loughton Home
